Mayor Miller Announces Tigers Are Leaving

Oneonta Mayor Dick Miller announced in a press release Wednesday, Jan. 27 that Tigers baseball will no longer call Oneonta home.
Miller wrote, "I have been notified by Andy Weber that the Tigers will not be playing in Oneonta this summer. He has confirmed to me that they will honor their lease agreement with the City and that all season ticket holders who have paid for the upcoming year will be immediately and fully refunded their payments."
The Tigers released a statement today confirming the rumors of the move which have been circulating since mid-January. The release said, "The Oneonta Athletic Corporation announces today that the New York-Penn League has received an application from the Oneonta Tigers to relocate to Norwich, Connecticut for the 2010 season. An approval from the New York-Penn League and Minor League Baseball is needed before relocation can become official."
Miller called the move, "unfortunate but understandable given the unanticipated opportunity presented to them by the NY Penn league in Connecticut." But also stated that "NY Penn League’s lack of loyalty and consideration of this community, not to mention the long term former owners, is shocking and reprehensible."
Miller said his interest is continuing the tradition of baseball in Oneonta this summer, and he has been approached by an independent professional team who would like to play in Oneonta.
If the application is approved, the Tigers will play at Senator Thomas J. Dodd Memorial Stadium, and the new lease agreement is for 10 years with three five-year club options. The new team name and logo to be used in Norwich will be unveiled after all approvals and consents have been received.
“We are very appreciative of the support we had in the community and want to thank all of our fans, sponsors, and partners who made the 2009 season possible,” said Weber, the club's general manager.
