Nellie C. Cole, 85; Former
Chief Clerk Of Family Court

SIDNEY – Nellie C. Cole, 85, of Sidney, passed away on Monday, March 1, 2010 at Bassett Hospital.
Nellie was born on Jan. 13, 1925 in Oneonta, the daughter of the late Clarence Joseph and Rose (Decker) Oliver. She married Irving W. Cole on October 14, 1944 in Oneonta. He predeceased her on Sept. 20, 1998.
Nellie grew up in the Oneonta area and graduated from the Oneonta High School, class of 1943. She obtained her AA Business Degree from the Delhi Agricultural and Technical College. She and her husband owned the former Buster Hyzer Dairy Farm. She worked for 25 years in Delhi, first as a Legal Secretary to the Honorable Richard H. Farley. Upon his election to a Delaware County Judgeship, she became Chief Clerk of the Family Court of the State of New York, a position she held until her retirement in 1987.
She was an avid quilter and has shown many of her quilts in area shows. She was an active member of the TriTown Piecemakers of Sidney and a member of the National Quilters Association. She was also a member of the Community Bible Church in Franklin and former member of the Women of the Moose #502 in Sidney. She was a volunteer for the Sidney Hospital Guild and the Delaware Valley Humane Society.
Nellie received many honors and awards. She was the Hospital Guild Volunteer of the Year in May, 2001, she was the Sidney First Lady of the Year in April 2003, she was the Republican Citizen of the Year 2007, was a member of the Delaware County and Sidney Republican Committees.
Nellie is survived by her three children and their spouses, Barry W. and Marie Cole of Sidney, Barbara Ritchey of Sidney and Janice and Donald Mushtare of Worcester, Massachussetts.
Nellie was predeceased by her parents, her husband and a brother, William Oliver.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 5, at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, 625 Main St., Franklin with Rev. Robert Goldenberg, Pastor of the Circle Drive Alliance Church in Sidney, officiating. Interment will be in the spring in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery in Franklin.

Mary Magruder Tompkins, 85;
World War II Veteran, Avid Traveler
ONEONTA – Mary Magruder Tompkins, 85, of Ballston Spa, passed away Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010, at home supported by her loving family.
Born in Syracuse, N.Y., she was the daughter of Robert and Deborah Magruder. Mary grew up in Syracuse and graduated from Nottingham High School. Mary proudly served in the U.S. Navy WAVES during WWII in Washington D.C., where she achieved the rank of Petty Officer Third Class in the Intelligence Division. She married Percy “Tommy” Tompkins in 1947, and together enjoyed 62 years of love, family, friendship and travel.
For much of her adult life, she lived in the Otego and Oneontaarea, where she served as Past Matron of the Eastern Stars and Past President of the Otego Fireman’s Auxiliary, and was active in both the Otego and Oneonta Methodist Churches. Mary was co-owner of the Otego Hardware store for several years while at the same time assisted in managing the Town of Otego affairs as Town Clerk. For three years she and “Tommy” managed The Sidney Senior Village. Upon retiring, Mary and “Tommy” traveled the United States in their RV taking in all the sights and sounds of the country they both loved.
Mary was passionate about volunteering; she prepared meals at Oneonta’s Saturday’s Bread, and knitted blankets for premature babies. She enjoyed watching many sports and was often seen at local sporting events. Mary was recently active in the Malta Ridge Methodist Church and the Senior Citizens Association in Ballston Spa.
Mary is survived by her husband and best friend, Percy “Tommy” Tompkins, her five sons; James (Debra) of Rockwall, Texas, Kenneth (Jana) of Westminster, Colorado, Kevin (Joanne) of Quinton, Virginia, Bruce (Lorraine) of Manlius, N.Y., and Brian (Laurene) of Ballston Spa, N.Y., thirteen grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, her sister Jane Anderson of Cummings, Georgia, and her brother John Magruder of Onondaga Hill, N.Y.
A memorial service will be at 6 p.m. Friday, March, 5, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home.
Mary V. Powell, 94;
Family Woman
ONEONTA – Mary V. Powell died peacefully late Monday afternoon, Feb. 22, 2010 in the place she most loved – her home of 63 years at 18 Maple St., Oneonta.
Mary was born April 3, 1915 in Shalichi, Poland to Fyodor and Wiera (Zedick) Sakowich. At age 13 she traveled alone from Warsaw to New York to join her mother and stepfather, Phillip Pasko in Oneonta. Mary attended Mitchell Street School and went on to get her license as a hairdresser. She married Fred N. Powell on Nov. 23, 1946 in St. Mary’s Church, Oneonta.
As a young woman Mary loved to draw. Later in life she used her artistic talent to create vibrantly colored hooked rugs and intricately crocheted tablecloths, curtains, table runners, and doilies. She loved to read and especially enjoyed putting old Tuco jigsaw puzzles together. Mary loved traveling the back roads around Oneonta and Cooperstown, and spending time at her daughter and son-in-law’s camp at Arnold Lake.
The greatest joy of Mary’s long life was her unconditional love of her family and the creation of a loving home. She was a wonderful cook and seamstress. Mary was a lover of nature and enjoyed watching the birds and squirrels near her home. She had a green thumb and was frequently asked to restore health to ailing house plants.
Mary is survived by her five children: Mary, Rose Anne and husband, Bud Pirone, Betty, Chris, Fred and wife, Sue Powell; her grandchildren, Ana and Heather Powell; her beloved sister, Anna and husband, Donald Cooper; her niece, Mary-Anne Ross; her nephew, Phillip Cooper and his wife, Tina and their daughter Emily; her step-grandchildren, Patty Pirone (Orson Moon), Kim Baskin (Walter), and Mike Pirone; her step-great grandchildren, Hannah, Sam, and Sadie Baskin and Lila Pirone-Moon.
Mary was predeceased by her mother, father, stepfather, her brother-in-law and two sisters-in-law, and her beloved husband of 47 years.
Mary was a member of St. Mary’s Church and the Rosary Society. A mass of Christian Burial was celebrated there Friday, Feb. 28.

Jeanne S. Bryden, 82;

ONEONTA – Jeanne S. Bryden, 82, of Oneonta, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010 at the Otsego Manor Nursing Home in Cooperstown.
Jeanne was born on July 7, 1927 at Parshall Hospital in Oneonta, the daughter of the late G. Frank and Florence A. (Fisher) Slawson. She married Lauren “Steve” Bryden of Franklin in 1944. They divorced in 1982.
Jeanne grew up in North Franklin on the family farm on Sleepy Hollow now Slawson Road. She lived most of her life in Franklin before moving to Oneonta.
She worked as a partner on the family farm until her 50’s, when she returned to school for training as a medical secretary. She worked for several years at the Delaware County Infirmary (now Countryside Care Center) and then at the skilled nursing unit at The Hospital in Sidney.
After living in Florida for a short period, she returned to the Oneonta area, working for the City of Oneonta for many years as a File Clerk working to archive many old maps and documents. She also worked for the Department of Labor before retiring.
Jeanne was a member of the Aldrich Baptist Church in North Franklin, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Nader Towers Residents Association where she served as treasurer.
Her hobbies included reading, traveling, and needlework. She enjoyed spending time with her family.
Jeanne is survived by her children, Thomas W. (Michele) Bryden of South New Berlin, Ronald L. (Paula) Bryden of Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, Doris J. (Art) Hughes of Johnson City and Penny E. (Christopher) Tremain of Otego.
She is also survived by her ten grandchildren, Taryn (Bill) Hubbard, Heather (Chris) Bryden-Golliver, Dawn Bryden, Trevor Bryden, Steven Bryden, Steven Michalovic, Teresa Michalovic, Colleen Michalovic, Tyler Tremain and Kailee Tremain; her sister, Jeanette Bradshaw of Scotia, New York; her brother, Larry Slawson of New Jersey; her great grandsons, Owen and Braden; and a special former son-in-law, Henry Michalovic.
Jeanne was predeceased by her parents, G. Frank and Florence Slawson; her siblings, Laverne Slawson, Cora Lewis Belden, Frances Dahlberg, George Slawson, Lynn Slawson, Cliff Slawson and Ralph Slawson.
A service to celebrate her life will be held on at 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 15, in the Aldrich Baptist Church, North Franklin with Patricia Judd, officiating.
There will be no calling hours and a private family interment will be held in the spring at the Ouleout Valley Cemetery in Franklin.


John Lynch, Jr., 81; Worked At

BLUFFTON, S.C. – John M. Lynch, Jr., 81, of Bluffton, South Carolina and formerly of Oneonta, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010 in Georgia.
John was born March 6, 1928 in East Meadow, Long Island, New York, the son of John M, Sr. and Mary (Wolf) Lynch. On Sept. 23, 1950, John was married to Clara Bellows.
He proudly served in the United States Army, enlisting in 1945 and was stationed in Japan.
Until his retirement, John worked for many years at the Oneonta Consolidated School as the superintendent of grounds and maintenance.
John is survived by his wife of 59 years, Clara Lynch; his son, Gary John Lynch and his wife Deb; and his daughter, Barbara Werdann and her husband Frank.
He is also survived by his grandchildren, Melissa Brockway and her husband Randy, Kristin Werdann, Brennan, Collin, Zachary, and Adam Lynch; his great granddaughter, Taryn Brockway; his two brothers, Howard and Edward Lynch; and his sister, Theresa Freiberger.
John was predeceased by his son, Douglas Lynch; his mother and father, Mary and John; and his sister, Margaret Tilton.

Phyllis Adair O’Connell, 64;
Entered Banking Later In Life

ONEONTA – Phyllis (Hebbard) Adair O’Connell, 64, of West Milford, N.J., and formerly of Oneonta, passed away on Friday, Jan. 29, 2010, surrounded by loved ones.
She was born on June 6, 1945, in Delhi, the daughter of Herbert and Pauline (Palmer) Hebbard. She grew up on the Meadowbrook Farm in Davenport and attended Charlotte Valley Central School, where she graduated in 1963.
She married Eugene Adair on June 5, 1965, and eventually settled in Oneonta, where Phyllis was a member of the United Methodist Church and active in the Jayncees. She enjoyed bowling, golf and bridge. In addition to raising their three children, Phyllis and Gene opened their home to several foster children. Gene passed away suddenly in 1975.
Phyllis married Jack O’Connell on June 17, 1978, moving to Franklin Lakes, N.J., in 1981. Phyllis collected antiques, even owning and operating a small shop. She began working in the banking business in 1984.
At the time of her death, she worked in the commercial lending department at Lakeland Bank in Oak Ridge, NJ.
Survivors include three children in New Jersey, five step children, six grandchildren, and her mother and an aunt in Davenport.
The funeral was Feb. 3 at the United Methodist Church, Davenport, with the Revs. Nancy Russell and Martha Vink, officiating. Interment will be in the spring in the Davenport Cemetery.
Arrangements were with Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home.

Burton Henry Sheldon II, 98;
Never Lost Love Of Farming

WEST ONEONTA – Burton Henry Sheldon II, 98, who throughout his teaching career continued his interest in the family farm, passed away Thursday, Jan. 19, 2010, after a brief illness.
He was born on March 15, 1911, near the end of the horse-and-buggy era. He and his sister Katherine used to ride their ponies the one mile to elementary school in West Oneonta and later traveled by trolley to secondary school in Oneonta.
Burton’s father wanted him to be a lawyer, so he graduated with a B.A. degree in political science from Hartwick College in 1935. However, he obtained a teaching certificate from the Oneonta Normal School in 1936 and spent most of his teaching career, until retirement, as a junior high science teacher at the Draper School in Schenectady. He derived great pleasure over the years from his active participation as an alumnus.
Burton learned the love of farming from his parents, was active in 4-H and showed sheep at local, state and international fairs as a youth. Even while teaching out of the area, he returned to West Oneonta on weekends and summers to oversee the running of the family farm. Until just a few years ago, he continued to care for the farm and a small herd of Cheviot sheep.
Burton’s Christian faith was an important part of his life and he was a longtime member of the West Oneonta Baptist Church.
He was predeceased by his wife, Dora, and his sisters and their husbands, Mabel and Harrison Straight and Katherine and Richard Turrell.
Survivoes include nieces and nephews, Thomas (Christie) Moseley, Jim (Donna) Moseley, Elizabeth (Thomas) Quest, Marjorie (Joseph) Julian, Robert (Rusty) Turrell, Josephine Kenyon, John (Joyce) Turrell, Virginia (Timothy) Wetherbee, Ruth (Warren) Smith and Richard (Rhonda) Turrell; as well as their children and grandchildren.
The family gives special thanks to Dr. Ronald Zerbe for being a good friend to Burton, and to the staff at Fox Nursing Home for the care they gave him.
The funeral was Saturday, Jan. 23, at West Oneonta Baptist Church. Memorial donations may be made to the church at Box 224, West Oneonta, NY 13861.

Ruth E. Chamberlin Gomiller,
82; 32-Year Nurse’s Aide At Meadows

MILFORD – Ruth E. Chamberlin Gomiller, a nurse’s aide for 32 years at the Otsego County Home & Infirmary, and then The Meadows, passed on Friday evening, Jan. 22, 2010, at Bassett Hospital, after a brief illness.
She was 88, just four days shy of her 89th birthday.
Ruth was born Jan. 26, 1921, at Dog Hill Farm in the Town of Maryland. A daughter of Glenn Chamberlin and Jessie Mae Stickles Chamberlin, Ruth was only 7 when her mother died of tuberculosis.
Ruth attended school in Maryland, then at Oneonta High School when it was on Academy Street.
On June 22, 1936, she married Joseph James Gomiller, Sr., at a ceremony in West Oneonta, with the Rev. O. Blakely Hill officiating.
In 1951, she joined the Otsego County Home and Infirmary, which later became The Meadows, retiring in 1983.
A member of the Milford American Legion Post No. 1566 Ladies Auxiliary, she attended the Milford United Methodist Church.
She loved bingo, crossword and word-search puzzles, card games and country music, as well as watching game shows on TV. She also enjoyed fishing in the Susquehanna River, tending to her gardens, and just being with family.
Survivors include a daughter, Shirley M. Gomiller of Milford; three sons, Joseph J. Gomiller, Jr. of Rockingham, N.C., Gerald F. Gomiller and his wife, Laura, of “Happy Valley” in the Town of Maryland, and John C. Gomiller and his wife, Jane, also of Rockingham; 15 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Her husband Joe died on Oct. 10, 1988. She was also predeceased by a sister, Maud Charlotte Chamberlin Youmans Mattice, on Sept. 3, 1972; and grandson Kevin Roy, Dickison on Oct. 22, 2009,
A graveside service will take place later this spring in Maryland Cemetery, where Ruth will be laid to rest in the Daniel Pratt plot along with her mother and father and sister.
Memorial contributions may be to the Milford American Legion Post No. 1566, West Main Street, Milford, NY 13807.

Elizabeth T. Yetter, 83;
Retired Therapist

ONEONTA – Elizabeth Theresa “Betty” Yetter, 83, passed away on Monday, Jan. 18, 2010, at Otsego Manor. Survivors include a daughter in Oneonta.
Betty was born on March 23, 1926, in West Orange, N.J., the daughter of the late Joseph and Josephine (Kocher) Quinn. She married William F. Yetter, who passed away on Feb. 5, 1999.
She worked for RCA record, and as an occupational therapist at Andover (N.J.) Nursing Home. In retirement, she volunteered with Catskill Area Hospice.
She enjoyed nature, especially bird watching and gardening, as well as crafting, crossword puzzles, reading, dancing and spending time with her family.
Survivors include her daughters, Linda M. Wright and her husband, David, of Reeders, Pa., Virginia A. Brower of Oneonta and Deborah J. Pasquariello and her husband, Peter, of Toms River, N.J.; three grandchildren, Kimberly Rispoli of Toms River, and David Brower and Melissa Brower, both of Oneonta; and two great-grandchildren, Taylor and Allie Rispoli.
In keeping with Betty’s wishes, there will be no formal calling hours. A private service was planned in Orange, N.J., for family members.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 1 Birchwood Drive, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Nicholas K. Uzenski, 21;
Marine Dies in Afghanistan

FRANKLIN – Marine Cpl. Nicholas K. Uzenski, 21, of Franklin, died Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, due to combat injuries sustained in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.
Born Dec. 30, 1988, in Sidney, Nick joined the Marines in January 2008. He was stationed on Okinawa with the 3rd Recon BTN, Bravo Company, before his deployment to Afghanistan.
While at Franklin Central School, he was a member of the Drama Club, Spanish Club, SADD, Student Council, V Varsity Club, Varsity Baseball and Varsity Basketball Team. He was also the Senior Prom king in 2006.



Jonathan Dean Sr.,
67; Retired Welder

ONEONTA
– Jonathan W. Dean Sr., 67, of Oneonta, a retired welder, passed away Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, at Bassett Hospital.
Born Oct. 3, 1942, in Milford, he was the son of the late Orville and Bertha (McAdams) Dean.
He enjoyed motorcycles.
He is survived by his children, Stacey Dean, Jeremy Dean, Tanya Brooks, Jonathan Dean Jr., Cindy Starr, Sandy Mallette, Christine Fassett and Jonathan Swift; his brothers, Orville and Trudy Dean and James Browning; his partner of 18 years, Sharon Swift, and her children, Jolene and Jason Swift; a special friend, Bill Triolo, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his brother, Roger Dean.
The funeral was Wednesday, Jan. 20, Bookhout Funeral Home, with the Rev. Gary Bonebrake, pastor of the Main Street Baptist Church. Interment will be in the spring in Maryland Cemetery.


Venena Edmunds Bain, 76;
Known For Her Apple Pies

ONEONTA – Venena Edmunds Bain, 76, of Oneonta, formerly of New Lisbon, passed away Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, at Wilson Memorial Hospital.
She was born on July 8, 1933, in Garrattsville, the daughter of Annie Marie (McVerry) and Thomas Ward. She married James Donald Bain on Aug. 4, 1951.
Venena spent many years as a homemaker, raising her family, gardening, canning and baking; her apple pies were particularly notable. In her later years, she was a waitress and a home health care provider.
Venena was predeceased by her husband of 50 years.
Survivors include her children, Donna Bain of Binghamton, Joyce Giacoma of Plantation, Fla., Nancy Burns and her husband, Jim, of Johnson City, and Kenneth Bain and his wife, Kitty, of Oneonta; her beloved grandchildren, Karen (Jason) Nuss, Peter and Andrew Giacoma and Jill and Adam Burns; also, brothers, a sister, a sister-in-law and step-siblings.
At her request, Venena's body was donated to the Albany Medical College Anatomical Gift Program.
The funeral was planned for 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 21, at the Morris United Methodist Church.


Vern L. Law, 59;
Highway Department Employee

WEST ONEONTA – Vern L. Law, 59, of West Oneonta, a mechanic who ran his own business before joining the Otsego County High Department, passed away suddenly Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010, at Fox Hospital.
He was born in Norwich, the son of William and Barbara (Brazee) Law. He married Kristine Martin on June 12, 1994, in Laurens.
In addition to his wife, survivors include his children, Crystal Trask, Jim Ricca, Brian Trask and his wife, Kimberly, and Bill Trask and his wife, Debrah Trask, and five grandchildren, Patrick, Pheonix, Madison, Kaden, and Kayleigh.
The funeral was Sunday, Jan. 17, at the Johnston Funeral Home, Morris, with the Rev. Judy Thistle officiating. Burial will be in Bennett Cemetery in the spring.

Irena Blaszczuk Putrycz, 86; Holocaust Survivor

DELHI – Irena Blaszczuk Putrycz, a Holocaust survivor, passed away Friday, Jan. 8, at the Countryside Care Center, Delhi. She was 86.
Irena was born on March 5, 1923, near the village of Zholoby, Ukraine. At 19, she and hundreds of other girls from the surrounding villages were forcibly relocated to work farms and factories in Nazi Germany and Austria.
For three difficult years she suffered hardships and abuse at the hands of her captors. On more than one occasion she tried to escape, only to be captured, returned and punished.
In the spring of 1945, when the Allied victory appeared inevitable, Irena and her infant daughter, Genia, were released from servitude. They survived, sleeping in bomb craters at night and hiding in burned-out ruins during the day.
Uneducated and with little more than her determination, she located a displaced-person camp by way of the Red Cross. In 1946, she was relocated to a refuge camp in the United Kingdom.
It was there she met and later married Jozef Putrycz, a decorated combat veteran in the Polish army, who survived a Russian concentration camp.
In 1955, the family came to the U.S., finally settling in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn. She had lived in Delhi for the past 11 years.
Irena is survived by her son, Walter Putrycz, and his wife Pamela Peters, of Franklin; four grandchildren, Elizabeth Nora Putrycz, Jozef Evan Putrycz, John Stetz and Mark Stetz. She is also survived by her son-in-law, John Stetz Sr.; three great grandchildren: Alison, Cal and Zinnia and two nieces, Linda Putrycz and Lisa Cooke, Both of Canada.
She was predeceased by her husband and a daughter, Jennifer Stetz.
The funeral was Tuesday, Jan. 12, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, with Pastor Derek Johnson, Delhi Community Church, officiation. Internment will be in the spring in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.
Memorial donations may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 1 Birchwood Drive, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Charles ‘Chuck’ Muehl, 69; Former
Schenevus School Board President


SCHENEVUS – Charles L. Muehl, 69, an Oneonta native and former president of the Schenevus Central School Board, passed away Friday, Jan. 1, 2010, at Bassett Hospital, after a long illness.
He was born March 2, 1940, in Oneonta, the son of John William and Amelia (Milavec) Muehl.
In 1958-62, her served in the Navy. He was aboard the USS Constellation when it was commissioned.
He married Carol Munson on March 21, 1964, in Nevada.
Chuck was a self-employed contractor since 1969, and was a grave excavator at local cemeteries.
He was a member of the St. Mary's/St. Joseph's Catholic Church.
He served for 10 years total on the school board, and also 10 years as Town of Maryland assessor.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Lisa Cooper and her husband, John, of Oneonta, and Stacey Camilleri and her husband, Ernie, of Westford; stepchildren Linda Briggs and Bob Sutton Jr., both of Maryland; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law.
He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, John "Jack" Muehl.
A memorial Mass and interment is planned in the spring.

Grace Oles, 82; Waitressed
At Bresee's Health Bar


ONEONTA
– Grace (Shaw) Oles, 82, a waitress at Bresee's Health Bar for 35 years, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, at Bassett Hospital.
She was born Sept. 28, 1927, on the family farm in South Kortright, the daughter of the late Frank and Rose (Swiderski) Dorosky. Grace graduated from Stamford Central School.
Grace married Carl P. Shaw on June 6, 1948. Together they shared 39 years of marriage until his death Oct. 23, 1987. On March 7, 1992, Grace married Howard Oles. Howard predeceased her in the spring of 1998.
She enjoyed gardening, cooking for her family, taking many bus trips with Eastern Travel, but most of all, Grace loved spending time with her family especially her two granddaughters.
She was a member of St. Mary's
Roman Catholic Church and Young at Heart.
Survivors include a son, Ronald C. Shaw and his wife, Letty, of Oneonta; a daughter, Bonnie Shaw and her husband, John Hartner, of Oneonta; two grandchildren, Tracy Shaw of Boston and Leann Shaw of Oneonta; one sister, Pauline Fowlston of Florida; a special sister-in-law, Betty Dean of Oneonta; and a close friend, Shirley Banner of Fly Creek, as well as several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by one sister, Frances Eckerson, and two brothers, Harry and Kenneth Dorosky.
A funeral Mass was Friday, Jan. 8, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, with Father Joseph Benintende, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the spring in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Rita Davis, 64; Worked County
Fair Circuit, Played Lotto


MORRIS – Rita Davis, whose business, East West Cowboys, involved her in numerous county and state fairs, passed away Jan. 7, 2010, at Fox Hospital, after a battle with cancer. She was 64.
Rita was born on March 21, 1945, in Morris in Morris. She grew up in Florida, but moved back to Upstate New York to start her business. She loved travelling and meeting people.
She enjoyed her family and friends, music - especially blues festivals – and her daily Lottery numbers.
Survivors include her boyfriend, Carlos Molina; two sons, Daniel Davis of Laurens and his wife, Barbara, and Richard Davis of Tucson, Ariz., and his wife, Peggy; grandchildren Anthony and Jordon Davis of Laurens, and Jessica and Justin Davis of Tucson, and many friends and family here and in Arizona.

COOPERSTOWN – Christine Fiore Pohl, a loving and devoted wife and mother and special education teacher at Oneonta Middle School, passed away peacefully Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010, at her home after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was 51.
A service celebrating Chris’ life will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, at The Otesaga.
The funeral service was held Wednesday, Jan. 13, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Washington, N.J.

Mary Lou Knott, 64

ONEONTA
– Oneonta native Mary Lou (Wood) Knott, 64, of Elizabethton, Tenn., passed away Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010, at Johnson City (Tenn.) Medical Center following a sudden illness.
A native of Oneonta and retired school teacher, she was a daughter of Norma Vitch of Elizabethton and the late Austin Wood.
Survivors include a sister, Nancy Fodero and her husband, Joe, of Oneonta.

Suzanne DeVost, 54

FRANKLIN – Suzanne Belle (Cronauer) DeVost passed away peacefully Wednesday, Dec. 30, at the home of her parents, Robert and Joan Cronauer, after fighting lung cancer for over a year.
Suzanne was born in Sidney, on Aug. 23, 1955, the daughter of Robert and Joan (Burnside) Cronauer, who survive her.
She was a graduate of the Franklin Central School, attended SUNY Delhi and SUNY Oneonta, and had been living in Owego in recent years.
Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.


Doris A. Bennett, 95; Teacher

FRANKLIN – Doris A. Bennett, 95, of Franklin, an elementary teacher at Franklin Central School for 37 years, retiring in 1972, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009 at the Oneonta Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
Doris was born on March 19, 1914, in New Berlin, the daughter of Gust and Anna E. (Sargent) Almsted. She married Lawrence E. Bennett on March 27, 1948. He predeceased her on Aug. 4, 1975.
Survivors include her faithful caregiver, Vivian Groat, Franklin.

Leslie M. Fulton, 40;

Survivors In Oneonta

ONEONTA – Leslie M. Fulton, 40, of Oneonta and Daytona Beach, Fla., passed away on Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009, at Fox Hospital.
He was born on July 9, 1969 in Port Jervis, the son of George W. and Anne Marie (Marsiglia) Fulton, Jr.
He worked as a salesman for the American Hospital Patient Guide in Schenectady. He enjoyed traveling, hunting, fishing, golf, NASCAR and any outdoor activity.
Leslie is survived by his father, George W. Fulton, Jr. of Daytona Beach; his companion, Colleen Pidgeon Erbe and her daughter, Carleen, of Oneonta; his brother, George W. Fulton III, and his wife, Kelly, of York, Pa.; his sisters, Eva Marie Ferrara and her husband, Joe, also of York, and Kathleen Fulton and her companion, Steven Rathbone, of Oneonta.

Hazel Ulm Wayman, 75;
Dog Breeder, Handler, Columnist

ONEONTA – Hazel Ulm Wayman, 75, who operated Hannalore Boarding, a grooming and breeding kennel on Winney Hill Road for more than 20 years, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2009, in Rochester.
She had lived in Oneonta and West Palm Beach, Fla.
She was born Nov. 8, 1934, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Richard and Hazel (Van Ness) Fitte.
She was married to Frank W. Ulm on July 16, 1955, in Brooklyn, and immediately moved to Oneonta. Frank died Jan. 19, 1974. On Oct. 28, 1983, she married Dr. John M. Wayman in the First Presbyterian Church in Oneonta.
At Hannalore Boarding, Hazel bred show dogs and sold them in 48 states, Canada and Europe. She was licensed by the American Kennel Club as a professional show dog handler.
Hazel was a columnist and had articles printed in such international dog magazines as the Basenji Dog of America, Basenji Club of Canada, Dog World Magazine and the German Shepherd Review. She was guest speaker at Dog Symposiums held in Nebraska and Canada.
She served as president of the Del-Otse-Nango Kennel Club, on the board of directors of Susquehanna SPCA, Cooperstown, as president of Oneonta Chapter of Parents without Partners, and was a member of the Federated Garden Club.
Locally, she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and, in Florida, of the Royal Palm Presbyterian Church.
She worked for the state police Troop C before her marriage to Dr. Wayman.
In addition to her husband, survivors include a son, Joseph W. Ulm; daughter, Pat Ulm-Mazer (Steve Mazer); stepdaughters Cyndy Duffy, Nancy Wayman, Wendy (Skip) Willbach, Amy West (fiance, Patrick Deptula); sisters, Edna Grace Kennedy, Consuelo Okdie (Joseph); brother, Frederick E. Fitte (Terry); nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be in the spring. Arrangements by Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home.

Ani P. Colone, 97;
Led City, BOCES Boards

ONEONTA – One of the city’s most revered citizens, Ani P. Colone, 97, president of the Oneonta School and BOCES boards for many years, passed away Sunday, Dec. 20, at Fox Hospital.
Ani was born on Dec. 17, 1912, in Oneonta, the son of Frank and Lucia (Valentini) Colone. He was first married to Eva Jerome, who passed away in 1952. He then married Catherine Lynch in 1956; she passed away in 1987.
Ani was a member of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta.
He graduated from Oneonta High School with high honors. He studied architecture at RPI, ranking sixth in his class. He also attended Albany Law School and Hartwick College.
Ani Served on the city school board for 17 years. He was instrumental in building Oneonta’s modern school system, including construction of five new buildings.
An advocate of quality public education, Ani was a leader in developing BOCES, serving as a board member and president. He was Area 8 representative to the state School Board Association.
Involved in scouting, he served on the Eagle Board of Review for many years and received the coveted Silver Beaver Award.
He was active in the Sixth Ward Boosters Club, the Sixth Ward Athletic Club, the Italian-American Club, and the Oneonta Youth Board.
A baseball fan, he attended every Hall of Fame Induction ceremony for 50 years. And he was a recipient of the SUNY Oneonta Distinguished Citizen Award.
Ani cherished his American heritage and was a speaker to many Memorial Day ceremonies both in Oneonta and Cooperstown.
For 36 years, Ani was employed as a case worker for Otsego County Social Services. For 50 years, he worked parttime in Bresee’s Men’s shop, where he was noted for trademarked boutonnière and his welcoming personality.
Survivors include four children, Frank Colone and his wife, Peggy, of Saratoga Springs, Albert Colone and his wife, Diana, of Oneonta, Lucia Colone of Cooperstown, and Patrick Colone of Oneonta; his five grandchildren, Paul Colone, Lisa Colone, Christina Colone, Luke Colone and Gregory Colone; and two great-grandchildren, Ryan and Julia Colone.
Also, his brother, Enio Colone and his wife, Dolores, of Oneonta, several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
He was predeceased by his sisters, Alvira Colone, Ida Valensisi, Lisa Romiti and Ethel Sieder, and by his brother, Albert (Eddigate) Colone.
Calling hours were 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home.
A Mass of Christian Burial was planned at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 23, at St. Mary’s Parish Center with the Very Rev. John Burns, officiating. Interment will be in the spring in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Bernice, B. Colban, 74;
Retired Manager Of McDonald’s Restaurant.


ONEONTA – Bernice Beatrice Colban, 74, of Oneonta, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009 at her residence.
She was born on Feb. 18, 1935 in Brooklyn the daughter of William and Marie (Taeger) Stoehrer. She married William J. Colban on Novemeber 7, 1953 in Ridgewood.
She was a manager for McDonald’s in Ridgewood for many years. She retired in 1989.
.Being from a large family, Bernice enjoyed family reunions and having her wonderful children and grandchildren gather in her home.
She enjoyed going to Bingo with her husband of 56 years. Bernice loved doing crafts and she made Christmas stockings for all her grandchildren.
She enjoyed life and her peaceful home here in Oneonta that she and her family built. She liked sitting on her porch listening to the water rushing over the rocks opposite her home, that was very calming.
She is survived by her husband, William Colban of Oneonta; her children, Marie Mazzarella and her husband Garrett of Otego, William Colban and his wife, Rosemarie of Monroe, and a son, Kevin Colban of Greenwood Lake.
She is also survived by his grandchildren, James Colban, Daniel, Alyssa, and Kaylene Mazzarella, and Nicolas Colban; a brother, Edward Stoehrer of Glendale.
There will be no formal funeral service.

Clyde E. Hungerford,
81; D&H Retiree

ONEONTA
– Clyde E. Hungerford, 81, a D&H retiree, passed away Monday, Dec. 7, 2009, at his home in Vero Beach, Fla.
The son of Ernest and Ina (Edwards) Hungerford, he was born June 6, 1928, in Oneonta.
He attended city schools, then served in the National Guard from 1949 to 1959. He was a self-employed truck driver and later a machinist for the D&H Railroad, retiring in 1984.
He enjoyed tinkering, inventing, and was an avid woodsman and woodworker.
Clyde is survived by his wife of 51 years, Minnie Hungerford of Cooperstown Junction; four children, Debra Shirt and her husband, Timothy, of Woodbridge, Va., Tom Hungerford of Woodbridge, Va., Teresa Glavin and her husband, Shawn-Michael, of Maryland, and Randy and his wife, Meg, of East Meredith; his grandchildren, Megan, Travis, Jonathon and Joshua Shirt, Sienna-Morgan and Shane-Isabella Glavin, Morgan, Jillian and Jesse Hungerford.
He is also survived by his siblings, Esther LeDoux, Kenneth Hungerford, Lionel Hungerford and Sarah Avery.
He was predeceased by his parents; brother, Charlie Hungerford; and sister, Laura Minutolo.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held in New York in the spring.

Craig H. Townsend, 67;

Former Vista Volunteer

ONEONTA – Craig H. Townsend, 67, a retired social worker and former Vista volunteer, passed away Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009, at his home after a courageous battle with prostate cancer.
He was born Nov. 23, 1942, in Oneonta, the son of Albert and Ernestine (Hyde) Townsend, and graduated from OHS and SUNY Oneonta.
He then joined Vista (Volunteers in Service to America) and moved out West where he became leader for the rural Missouri area.
In the early 1970s, he joined the Otsego County Department of Social Services as a case worker, later retiring from the Broome Developmental Services.
A devoted husband and father, he also an avid Yankee fan and enjoyed running. He was proud to complete the Pit Run and a lap around Otsego Lake.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia (Otvos) Townsend, whom he married on June 6, 1981, in Oneonta; his daughter, Maura Townsend, and her fiance, Sean Buckley, of Philadelphia; three nieces, Rachael Geelan, Amy Maurer and Sheri Cilano; his brother-in-law, Tracy Reynolds; his father’s widow, Betty Townsend; a grandniece, a grandnephew and several cousins.
He was predeceased by his sister, Nancy Reynolds.
A memorial mass was Wednesday, Dec. 16, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Joseph Benintende, pastor, as celebrant. Inurnment was in Mount Calvary Cemetery Columbium.

ONEONTA – Gordon D. Young, 82, passed away Monday, Dec. 7, 2009, at home.
He was born Nov. 22, 1927, in Oneonta, to Elmer and Mary Ellen Young of Colliersville, who predeceased him along with a sister, Madeline Terry of Sarasota, Fla.
His loving wife of 63 years, Gladys, survives him; as well as two sons, Richard (Dick) and wife Nancy Young of Otego and LeGrande (Lee) and wife Donna Young of West Laurens; three grandchildren, Richard Young Jr. of Oneonta, Michelle and Adam Edelstein of Worcester, Mass., and Jason and Amanda Young, stationed in the United States Coast Guard, Vicksburg, Miss.; two great-grandchildren, Erica Young of Oneonta and Hunterlee Young of Vicksburg, Miss.; one niece, one nephew; and a cousin and friend, Jan Ackley.
A private service is to be held at a later date.

Clyde S. ‘Beck’ Becker, 89;
New York Telephone Retiree
COOPERSTOWN – Clyde S. “Beck” Becker Jr., 89, a native of Cooperstown and World War II veteran who worked for New York Telephone Co. in Oneonta, died Monday Nov. 30, 2009, at Bassett Hospital, following a short illness.
Beck was born July 21, 1920, the son of Clyde Shepard Becker Sr. and Laura (Green) Becker. He graduated from Cooperstown High School, Class of 1940, and thereafter from the Manlius Military Academy.
He was employed by the National Commercial Bank & Trust Co. of Albany for about a year before he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He took basic training in Atlantic City, N.J., where he completed Radio School and Control Tower School and was assigned to the 55th Troop Carrier Squadron 375th Group.
Serving in the South Pacific as a radio operator aboard C-46 and C-47s, he took part in five campaigns and received two Air Medals, one with an oak leaf cluster, as well as the Distinguished Flying Cross in recognition of his combat service. He was discharged in June 1945.
After his return to Cooperstown, he married Harriet A. Morgan, a high school friend (CCS Class of 1941), on May 31, 1947, in Cooperstown Presbyterian Church. They had four children, all of whom survive: Gail (Joseph) Monington of Cooperstown, John Becker of Schenectady, Laura (Tom) Greene of West Oneonta and Sue (Paris) Reidhead of Hartwick.
Other survivors include nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, many of whom referred to him affectionately as “papa,” a number of nieces, nephews and cousins; his brother and sister-in-law, John and Ruth Becker of Pittsburgh, and by his special friend, Aline Heller and her family of Cooperstown.
Beck worked for New York Telephone, first in Cooperstown, then in Cherry Valley and Oneonta. He retired on Dec. 31, 1979, and in 1986 returned to Cooperstown.
He was a member and past president of the Cherry Valley Rotary Club, a member of Otsego Lodge #138 F&AM, VFW Post 7128 of Cooperstown, the Telephone Pioneers of America and the Mohican Club.

Bertha Ross, 92;
Communicant At St. Mary’s
ONEONTA – Bertha Ross, 92, formerly of Oneonta, where she was a communicant at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 28, 2009, at the Robinson Terrace Nursing Home, Stamford.
Bertha was born on Aug. 17, 1917, in Dalton, Pa., the daughter of the late John and Nellie (Madziak) Kruchinski. She married Aldivine Ross on Nov. 3, 1947, and he predeceased her on Aug. 25, 1988.
A homemaker, Bertha is survived by her children, Carol Townsend and her husband, Kenneth, of Stamford, and Gary Ross of Oneonta; her grandchildren, Michael Townsend and his wife, Ranea, Christopher Ross and Nicole Ross; great-grandchildren Timothy Townsend, Tyler Townsend and Makenna Naples, and sisters Mary Salada and Arlene Richter, both of Pennsylvania.
Bertha was predeceased by her husband, her parents, her brothers Andrew and Anthony, and her sisters Anna and Rose.
Interment was Friday, Dec. 4, at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons, with Rev. Joseph Benintende, pastor of St. Mary’s, officiating.
Arrangements were with the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Phillip E. Hobb, 63; Worked On Railroads

ONEONTA – Phillip Edwin Hobb, 63, of Oneonta, who spent his career at a railroad electrician, passed away at his home on Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009, with his family by his side.
He was born on Jan. 25, 1946, in Syracuse, to John W. Hobb Sr. and Esther M. (Schaff) Hobb.
Phillip served in the Air Force during the Vietnam era.
He was an electrician for New York Central, Penn Central, Conrail and CSX Railroads. He was a member of and served as chairman for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union, Local 770.
He was an avid Yankees fan and loved baseball in general, spending many happy hours at Damaschke Field.
Phillip is survived by his wife, Rolana Starr Hobb of Oneonta; his children, Wendy Michelle Vienneau (John) of Rensselaer, Michael Adam Hobb (Alisa) of Albany County, Kendra Monique Baker (Frederic) of Coxsackie, and Kimberly Michelle Lucas of Denver, Colo.; his grandchildren, Kris Alan Ward Jr., Matthew Shane Ward and Jerek Brian Hobb; brothers, John W. Hobb Jr., Richard Hobb, and Dennis Hobb; a sister, Mary (Hobb) Clark; many nieces, nephews, and other extended family.
Phillip was predeceased by his parents; his first wife, Sandra Leigh (Royce) Hobb and his grandson, Kristopher Phillip Ward.
A private service will be held at the convenience of the family.

Libby Akulin, 74; Worked On ‘Small World’

COOPERSTOWN – Libby Block Akulin, 74, an R.N. at Bassett Hospital who worked on the “It’s A Small World” exhibit for the 1964 World’s Fair that is still on exhibit at DisneyWorld, lost her battle with pancreatic cancer at home in Philadelphia on Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009. Her family was by her side.
Libby was born in Philadelphia on July 3, 1935, to Harry and Bella Block. She married Donald Akulin, on June 27, 1953.
The “It’s a Small World” attraction, at the World’s Fair Pepsi pavilion, featured animated dolls and animals frolicking in a spirit of international unity on a boat-ride around the world to the Sherman Brothers’ song.
Before returning to school for a nursing degree, she was a Girl Scout Leader of the Year and an Eastern Star Worthy Matron. She worked in labor and delivery for many years at Bassett, then became a hospice nurse for Wissahickon Hospice in Philadelphia from 1996 until the end.
More than anything else, her family remembers her as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend, nurse and very special person.
Survivors include her husband, her children, Lynne Kaufman and her husband Harvey, of Miami, Faye Munson and her husband Rick, of Oneonta, Kevin Akulin and Susan Jungclaus of Quakertown, Pa., and Beth Akulin of Oneonta; granddaughters Shannon and Michele Munson, and Bayla Akulin and great-granddaughter Niesa Davidson, all of Oneonta; two older sisters, Minya Yudenfriend and her husband Herbert, of Penn Valley, Pa., and Sherry Goldberg and her husband Ed, of Utica; an aunt, Ann Ross, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her parents and younger sister, Etta Davis of Sandy Springs, Ga.
A graveside service was held Friday, Nov. 27, in Philadelphia. Memorial donations may be made cancer research or your local hospice in Libby’s memory.

Douglas V. Sperry, Sr., 61; Avid Hunter And Fisherman

LAURENS – Douglas V. Sperry Sr., 61, of Laurens, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009, at his residence.
Doug was born on Aug. 14, 1948, in Oneonta, the son of Russell and Lucille (Koerner) Sperry. On April 4, 1970, he married Wanda Kilmer in Troy, NY.
For 15 years, Doug worked as a mechanic for Casella Waste Recovery of Oneonta, retiring in 2007.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family, and his two dogs, Abby and Zoe.
Doug is survived by his wife of 39 years, Wanda Sperry of Laurens; his father, Russell Sperry and his wife, Christina of Otego; his stepfather, Henry Riley of East Greenbush, NY; his children, Dennis Sperry and his wife, Carol of Unadilla, Douglas Sperry Jr. of East Meredith, Deanna Effner and her companion, Bob Thayer of Otego, Douglas Zindel of Marlboro, MA, and David Zindel and his wife, Heather of Massachusetts; his grandchildren, Sabrina, Ashley, Kristen, Tyler, and Jarrett.
He is also survived by his brothers, Russell Sperry of Triangle, Alaska, Thomas Berger of Syracuse, and Richard Sperry of Otego; his sister, Virginia Castle of Buffalo, and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Doug was predeceased by his mother, Lucille Riley; his son, Donald; and a brother, Jimmy.
A service to celebrate his life was held on Friday, Nov. 20, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand Street, Oneonta, led by his brother, Thomas Berger.

Engineer Frank J. Schwager Dies At 93

ONEONTA – Frank J. Schwager, 93, of Wakefield, R.I., who worked for NYSEG while living in Oneonta, passed away on Friday, Nov. 20, 2009, at the South County Hospital in Wakefield.
He was born on Jan. 6, 1916 in Newark, N.J., the son of the late John and Elizabeth (Geist) Schwager. He married Marie Grambs on Dec. 15, 1945, in Newark; she predeceased him on Oct. 26, 1999.
Frank was an electrical engineer for the Jersey Central Power Light Utility Co. for 25 years, retiring in 1979. Prior to that, he worked for NYSEG in Oneonta. He was a staff sergeant in the Army during World War II.
A family man, Frank enjoyed the outdoors with his wife and children, particularly fishing, hiking, swimming and camping. Also, he enjoyed working in his yard and on household projects and renovations.
Survivors include his his children, Frank C. Schwager of Manchester, N.J., Jeanne M. Schwager and her husband, Ted Bosack of Wakefield, R.I., and Kathleen E. Schwager and her partner, Paul Rabenold of Avon, Conn., grandchildren Seth and Sean Bosack, and great-grandchildren Lily and Sasha Bosack, as well as several nieces and nephews.
After a private funeral, interment will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Eileen M. Damon, 87; Operated
Blue Bonnet Antiques With Husband

PORTLANDVILLE – Eileen M. Damon, longtime proprietor of Blue Bonnet Antiques with her late husband, Steven, died Friday morning, Nov. 13, 2009, at Hampshire House Assisted Living Home in Oneonta, following a long battle with congestive heart failure. She was 87.
She was born Eileen Marie Noon on April 14, 1922, in Brooklyn, a daughter of William and Emma (Hamilton) Noon.
She married Steven N. Damon Jan. 24, 1954, in a ceremony at the Marble Collegiate Church in Manhattan.
In 1967, Steve and Eileen purchased an old mill in Portlandville on the banks of the Susquehanna River. In 1970, they also bought a home on Lake Street, Cooperstown, and spent endless hours on weekends and in the summers renovating the mill.
They soon moved Blue Bonnet Antiques, which they had been running on Long Island since the late ‘50s, to the mill, and moved permanently to Portlandville in 1981.
In later years, Eileen and Steve spent winter months at their home on St. Martin in the Caribbean.
After her husband died in November 2006, Mrs. Damon moved in with her daughter Lori and family in nearby Milford.
Due to deteriorating health, she spent the past year of her life with the exceptional people at the Hampshire House where she was adored by all.
Eileen is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Donna McQuillen and her husband, J.C. George, of Austin, Texas, and Mrs. Lori Henry and her husband, Ted, of Milford; one step-son, Wayne Rodier and his wife, Matoka, of Saratoga Springs; two beloved granddaughters, Megan and Krista of Milford; and one special daughter, Louann Liner of Milford.
She followed her husband of 52 years by three years to the day: He passed away Nov. 13, 2006.
Burial will be private in Lakewood Cemetery in Cooperstown.

Martin L. Finch, 84; Witnessed
D-Day From USS Catamount

ONEONTA – Martin L. Finch, 84, of Oneonta, a veteran who witnessed D-Day, passed away Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, at Fox Memorial Hospital.
He was born April 3, 1925, in Oneonta, the son of the late Mark W. and Lela Belle (Knapp) Finch.
In 1943, Martin enlisted in the Navy. He trained at Sampson Naval Base and proudly served his country during World War II as a diesel mechanic. He witnessed the invasion of Normandy from the reserve post on the USS Catamount and received a certificate of recognition from the Consulate of France for the part he played in the battles for the Liberation of France. He was honorably discharged in 1946.
After returning from the Navy, Martin graduated from Oneonta High School class of 1948. He then attended and graduated from Delhi Agricultural and Technical School in 1952. He also attended Utica College of Syracuse University.
Martin married Freda Wells, who predeceased him. He later married Frances Mary Berner, to whom he has been married to for over 50 years.
By trade, Martin was a carpenter and building contractor. He worked for Neil R. Neilson Contracting for over 25 years. In 1979, he started Finch Contracting and did most of his work at Bassett Hospital for over 15 years.
You could always find Martin up in the barn puttering on some construction project.


Doris Marion ‘Granny’
Little, 82, Oneonta Bookkeeper

ONEONTA – Doris Marion (Christiance) Little, 82, of Oneonta, died peacefully at home on Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009.
Affectionately known as Granny, she was born Oct. 28, 1927 in Amsterdam, N.Y., the daughter of Ruth B. and Chester Christiance. The Christiance family relocated and made their home in Oneonta in 1941.
Granny was a bookkeeper for several local businesses over the years but her most recent and loved place of employment was for Dr. Bryan Evanczyk.
Survivors include her sons, Rodric Little of Charlotte, NC; Christopher Little and wife, Patricia of Otego and her daughters, Bon Zuefle of Charlotte, NC and Roxana Hurlburt and husband, James of Otego.
Granny also is survived by her faithful grandchildren, Tifanne (Jerry) Wells of Oneonta; Aric Fleming of Steamboat Co; Jim (Patti) Hurlburt of Clayville, NY; Shyloe (Greg) Luehrs and her father, Larry of Charlotte, NC; Jesse Hurlburt of Otego; Kristen (Dave) Ferguson of Concord, NC; Seth and Levi Little of Otego and Colleen (Alan) Gaydorus of Afton.
She is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren, Cassandra (Thomas) Smith; Austin & Dalton Wells; Alexa and Gunner Hurlburt; Taiten Luehrs; Cali, Sayde, Nikiah and Shyahnna Gaydorus and one great-great granddaughter, Brenna Lynn Smith. Doris Marion also leaves behind her beloved brother and sister-in-law James and AllieMae Christiance and her two special nephews, James (Debbie) and William (Karen) Christiance and their children and great-grandchildren.
Granny’s life was enhanced by her very special friends, Linda Evancyzk, Beth Lifgren, Polly Bump, Bertha Redmond and Elaine Eldred.
Committal services for Granny will be private and held at the convenience of the family in Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Patrick Joseph Cerra, 90; WWII Veteran,
Worked On D & H Railroad For 35 Years

ONEONTA – Patrick Joseph Cerra, 90, of Oneonta, passed away on Monday, Nov. 10, 2009 at his residence.
Patrick was born on March 24, 1919, in Carbondale, Pa., the son of the late Pasquale and Francesca (DeFazio) Cerra.
He served in the Army during WW II. He worked for the D & H Railroad for 35+ years. Patrick loved being with his family and at home. He enjoyed many hours gardening. During his retirement, Pat and Mary enjoyed extensive travel abroad.
Patrick was a member of the 6th Ward Athletic Club and a member of the Oneonta American Legion and the VFW in past years.
Patrick is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary Cerra of Oneonta; his children, Donna Coyne and her husband, Joe of Oneonta, Patrick Cerra and his wife, Barbara of Bermuda, Mary Jean Price and her husband, Jeff of Dallas, Texas, and Cindy Belanger and her husband, Dave of East Kingston, New Hampshire; his grandchildren, Lynne Gould, David Filtranti, Kelly McRae, Stacey Price, Patrick Cerra, Joseph Belanger and Emily Belanger; three great grandchildren, Ellie and Evan Gould and Raegan McRae.
He is also survived by a brother, Bernard Cerra and his wife, Minnie of Worcester; a daughter-in-law, Janet Cerra of Orchard Park and several nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.
Patrick was predeceased by a son, Joseph Cerra; two sisters, Rose Pascoe and Jennie Carline; a brother, Louis Cerra.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, Nov. 13, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Parish Center with the Rev. Joseph Benintende, officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.
Friends may call Thursday, Nov. 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta at which time the family will be in attendance.

Marie Rose Murwin, 74; Retired A.O. Fox Employee

OTEGO – Marie Rose Murwin, 74, of Otego, a retired administrative assistant at Fox Memorial Hospital, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009 at her home, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on April 15, 1935, in Oneonta, the daughter of Salvatore and Lucy (Baldo) Bossio. She married Claude R. Murwin on April 18, 1954, and he predeceased her in 1994.
She enjoyed gardening, antiquing, reading and traveling south and to the Caribbean to visit her family. Marie was a member of St. Mary’s Church, Oneonta.
Survivors include Claude (Randy) Murwin of Otego, Sally Emsley and her husband Ross, of Trinidad, West Indies, Stephen Murwin and his family, Charlotte and Jeremy of Melbourne, Fla., and Elizabeth Murwin (George Allen) of Oneonta; her grandchildren, Randy and Stephanie Murwin; her mother, Lucy Gaisford of Melbourne, Fla.; her sister, Carol Quackenbush and her husband Henry, of Oneonta.
She is also survived by two nephews, David Quackenbush and his children, Brittany and Macey, and Mark and Janet Quackenbush and their children, Drue and Bryn; one niece, Kristin Quackenbush; and an uncle, Albert Baldo.
The memorial mass was Wednesday, Nov. 11, in St. Mary’s Parish Center, with the Rev. Joseph Benintende, officiating. Burial followed in the Bundy Cemetery, Otego.

Muriel I. Jeffrey; Active In Church Ministries

ONEONTA – Muriel Jeffrey went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009. Family and friends were in attendance at her passing.
Muriel was born in Binghamton, the daughter of Emmett and Ruth Shreckengast. She was raised in Kirkwood, received an associate's degree in food services and nutrition from Delhi Agriculture and Technical College in 1940.
She married Howard E. Jeffrey on Sept. 14, 1941, who died in 1981.
Muriel was a longtime resident of Nader Towers, and an active member of the River Street Baptist Church. She volunteered for the Youth for Christ Ministries, Baptist Missionary Society and sent special greeting cards to friends and family for years.
Muriel enjoyed her pinochle card club, watching baseball, visiting family and traveling with her friends.
Muriel is survived by her children, Mary J. Lewis and her husband, Stephen of Sequim, Wash., Ronald L. Jeffrey and his wife, Jean of Marietta, and Adelaide Van Buren and her husband, Bruce of Virginia Beach, Va.; three grandchildren, Jeffrey Lewis of Olympia, Wash., Holly Lewis of Nashville, Ind., and Steven Jeffrey of Liverpool; and three great-grandchildren, Mitchell Lewis, Emilee Lyn and Regan Jeffrey.
A memorial celebration of Muriel's life journey will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 6, 2009, at River Street Baptist Church, 133 River St., Oneonta. Reception to follow, location to be announced.
There will no interment as Muriel generously donated her body to Albany Medical College for education and study.

Barbara A. Isbell, 79; Air Force Veteran

ONEONTA – Barbara A. Isbell, a former Air Force nurse who was active in the Fox Hospital Women’s Auxiliary, passed away at Otsego Manor Cooperstown on Oct. 23, 2009. She was 79.
She was born on Nov. 6, 1929, to Rhea (Brais) and Edward Smith, in Ontario, Canada.
While serving in the Air Force as a first lieutenant, specialist surgical nurse and flight registered nurse, she met and married Frank M. Isbell in 1953 while stationed in Greenville, S.C. Her military commitment extended in the Reserves until 1955.
She was a dedicated volunteer and member the Fox Hospital Women’s Auxiliary, providing special meals to the lunch bar, working in the gift shop, and raising money for much-needed equipment and modernization of various departments.
She was active in St. Mary’s Church, Meals on Wheels and the Oneonta Country Club, where she won many tournaments in her later years.
Barbara was an expert knitter and embraced all forms of textile art. She shared this talent and created memorable banners, vestments and prizes for all the organizations she was involved with.
She was an accomplished chef, from soufflés to Coquilles Saint Jacque. Barbara loved to entertain and worked tirelessly to prepare crudités and canapés.
Survivors include her sister, Bernice of Florence, Mass.; her three children, Michael, Susanna and Lori; her six beloved grandchildren, Shannon, Kristen, Bryan, Breanna, Corey and Sofia, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
As a grandmother, she was “Goody” because she always had goodies to share as well as hugs and kisses.
She was predeceased by her husband, in October 2008, and also by her parents, her brother-in-law, Joseph Isbell of Prairie Village, Kansas, and her sister-
in-law Linda Eaves-Isbell of Memphis, Tenn.
The funeral was Tuesday, Oct. 27, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, followed by a graveside ceremony with full military honors at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Nancy E. Thompson, 76; Retired Fox Nurse

FRANKLIN – Nancy E. (Scarr) Thompson, 76, of Franklin, passed away Friday, Oct. 23, 2009, at the Albany Medical Center.
Nancy was born on July 10, 1933, in New York City, the daughter of Henry and Harriet (Salinger) Scarr. She married John O. Thompson on April 26, 1952.
A graduate of SUNY Oneonta, she retired in 1992 from Fox Hospital, where she was a registered nurse. Previously, she was at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.
Nancy was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Oneonta. She was also a member of the Susquehanna Quilters, and the Sun Bonnet Sue Quilters of Vero Beach, Fla.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years; her children, Glenn Thompson and his wife Jane, of Sloatsburg, Janet Thomas and her husband Francis, of Sunderland, Mass., Jean Downin and her husband Dale, of Franklin, and Heather Hotaling and her husband Glenn, of Oneonta.
Also, eight grandchildren, Kurt Thomas, Lauren Thompson, Carley Thompson, Kelley Hotaling, Megan Hotaling, Natalie Downin, Troy Thompson and Haley Downin; her brother Robert Scarr and his wife Margaret, of West Lake, Ohio, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was predeceased by a son, Kenneth R.Thompson.
A funeral service was Wednesday, Oct. 28, in the First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Mark Montfort, pastor, officiating. Interment followed in Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

Ronald Pidgeon, 83; Retired City Fire Captain

ONEONTA – Ronald Pidgeon, 83, a retired officer in the city Fire Department, passed away on Friday, Oct. 16, 2009, at the Oneonta Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
He was born Dec. 22, 1925, in Oneonta, the son of Peter and Carrie (Richards) Pidgeon. When Ron was a young boy, his father died in an accident on the D&H Railroad. His mother then married John Emmett, who raised him.
Ron was a Navy veteran, serving during World War II.
He married Thelma Ferguson on Aug. 14, 1948, at the Main Street Baptist Church in Oneonta.
Ron retired from the Oneonta City Fire Department as a captain in August 1983, after serving close to 30 years.
He was one of the founding members of the Catskill Fly Fishing Center & Museum in Roscoe. He was an avid fisherman, and enjoyed his summer fishing trips out West. He also liked to hunt.
Ron is survived by his loving wife of 61 years; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Jack and Jean Emmett of South Edmeston and Gordon and Ann Emmett of Uniondale; nieces and nephews Lynn Emmett, Ronnie and wife, Laura Emmett, Shelly Emmett, Gary Emmett, Rebecca Emmett-Fraser, Joe Pidgeon, Marlene Pidgeon, Darlene Pidgeon-Lance, Gregory Molatch, Steven Molatch, Walter Molatch, Andy Molatch, Barbara Molatch-Yano, Dedria Cox, Shirlene Burnside, Dennis Pidgeon, Sam Pidgeon and Cherie Starling; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was predeceased by his brother, Gerald Pidgeon, and sister, Joyce Molatch.
Rev. Alex Smith, pastor of the Capital District International Church in Albany, officiated at the funeral Tuesday, Oct. 20, at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, Oneonta. Interment was in the Ouleout Cemetery.

McKynze Kay
Morris, Hartwick;
14 Months Old

HARTWICK – McKynze Kay Morris, the 14-month-old daughter of Scott and Kimberly Morris, died unexpectedly in her sleep on Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2009.
Born July 29, 2008, she brought tremendous joy during her short life to everyone who knew or met her. An always happy and animated child, she was never without “a smile that was so big it looked like it would break her face.”
Even at her tender age, she had many, many loves and very few dislikes; she loved watching Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, dancing to Hanna Montana songs, bath time (especially picking out the toys she wished to bathe with), playing outdoors, eating foods of every description, animals of all kinds, vacations with her family and extended family, swimming lessons at the Clark Gymnasium, climbing stairs and over furniture, and hugging her beloved Jack Russell Terrier, Jasmine.
Despite her young age, her adventurous spirit earned her the family nickname of “Miss Independent”.
The funeral was Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home, Cooperstown, with the Rev. Mark Michael, rector, Christ Episcopal Church, officiating.

Raymond Rainville, 69; Overcame Blindness To Excel As Professor

ONEONTA – Raymond E. Rainville, 69, who overcame blindness to become a distinguished psychology professor at SUNY Oneonta, died of ALS and throat cancer at his home on Sunday evening, Oct. 4, surrounded by his wife and three children.
Ray was born in Manchester, N.H., on Aug. 29, 1940, son of Ernest O. (Joe) and Claire Rainville. He was raised on Kimball Street in Suncook, N.H., and graduated from Bishop Bradley High School in Manchester in 1959.
He attended the University of New Hampshire in Durham, graduating with a B.A. degree in political science in 1963. After graduation, Ray worked at the Crotched Mountain Rehabilitation Center as a teacher and counselor. After surgery for the treatment of glaucoma left him permanently blinded in 1965, he returned to the UNH where he obtained a master’s in 1968 and a Ph.D. in 1971.
On Sept. 1, 1967, Ray married Barbara Mudarri at the St. John of Damascus Church in Boston. They lived in Durham until August 1970, when he accepted a position of professor of psychology at SUNY Oneonta.
Early in his career at the college, he developed and taught a course on sleep and dreams. In 1972, he was awarded a Letter of Commendation for Innovation in the Teaching of Psychology by the American Psychological Association.
In 1974, Raymond received the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. In 1992, the SUNY Oneonta Alumni Association granted him a faculty award for superior performance.
He was a dedicated teacher for 39 years until his retirement in September 2009.
During a sabbatical leave from the college, the family spent two years in Onset, Mass., where Ray worked as clinical director for the Wareham Area Counseling Service.
Upon his return to Oneonta, he opened a private clinical psychotherapy practice, which he operated from 1980 to 1998.
Throughout his career, he published many papers, and he authored “Dreams Across the Life Span,” published by American Press in 1988.
A research paper, “A Contemporary Look at College Students’ Dreams,” appeared in the September issue of Dreaming, the Journal of the Association for the Study of Dreams.
Ray was a loving husband, father, grandfather, dedicated teacher and devoted friend. His distinctive personality, sharp wit and warm spirit endeared him to all. Ray was an avid reader who enjoyed debating politics, history, philosophy and science. He loved downhill skiing, camping, beaches, swimming and cycling on a tandem bicycle.
In addition to his wife of 42 years, Ray is survived by his three children, Michelle Thomson and her husband Alex of Buffalo, Marc Rainville of Phoenix, Ariz., and Laura Rainville and her husband Timothy Potts of Berkeley, Calif. His five grandchildren are: Hunter, Evelyn and Mackenzie Thomson, Sophia Rainville and Diego Potts. He is also survived by two brothers: Gene Rainville and his wife Margaret of Bluffton, S.C., and Richard Rainville of Tampa, Fla.
A memorial service was held Monday, Oct. 12, at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Oneonta.

George Cuyler, 87; Operated Mid-City Service Station

ONEONTA – George W. Cuyler Jr., 87, died Thursday, Oct. 8, 2009, at his home, surrounded by family, after an extended illness.
George was born Aug. 17, 1922, in Stuyvesant, to Harriet (Best) and George W. Cuyler, and attended Kinderhook schools. He served the Army Air Force during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1943.
Coming to Oneonta as a surveyor with the D&H Railroad, he met Wava L. Hatcher and they were married at St. James Episcopal Church on Thanksgiving Day 1944.
George operated the Mid-City Service Station on Main Street. He then worked as an area salesman for the Sunshine Biscuit Co. for more than 20 years, before joining SUNY Oneonta’s Maintenance and Operations Center, from which he retired in 1986.
George was a life member of the Oneonta Lodge BPOE 1312. He loved cars and enjoyed many happy summers with his family boating on Otsego Lake.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Gladys Puckett, in 1999.
George is survived by his wife of 64 years; three sons, G. William (Denise) of Oneonta, Christopher (Jackie) of Amissville, Va., David of Dover, Del., and a daughter, Alison (James Seymour) of Glenville; grandchildren Jacqueline (Chris) Jones of Schenectady, Karen (Tom) Oliver of Oneonta, Diane Cuyler of Amherst, Michael (Chieko) Cuyler of Bristow, Va., Daniel Seymour of Ballston Lake, and Daniel and Dylan Cuyler of Dover, Del.; great-grandchildren, Christina and Abigail Jones, Clark Oliver, and Kosei, May Elizabeth and Anika Cooper Cuyler; and several nieces and nephews.
To honor George’s wishes, there were no calling hours. A service to celebrate his life took place at St. James’ Episcopal Church, Tuesday Oct. 13, with his interment, with military honors, in the church’s columbarium.


Carol Fuller, 67; Realty Executive


ONEONTA – Carol A. Fuller, 67, of West Oneonta, a former banker and Board of Realtors executive, passed away on Friday, Oct. 9, 2009, at the Fox Hospital.
Carol was born on April 4, 1942, in Oneonta, the daughter of Michael and Nellie (Morzillo) Cannistra. She married Donald C. Fuller on June 17, 1961.
Carol worked as an office manager for Wachovia Securities in Oneonta until she retired in 2006. Prior to that she was executive officer for the Otsego/Delaware/Schoharie Board of Realtors. For 25 years she was a dental assistant for Dr. Sam Pondolfino.
Carol was a member of St. Mary’s Church. She was an avid golfer and in the Oneonta County Club.
Carol is survived by her husband of 48 years; her sister, Pat Conway and husband, Al, of Oneonta. Also, nieces and their husbands, Kristin and Christopher Twomey of Biddeford, Maine, Kathy and D.J. Stein of Otego, and Kim and Jay Frazier of Oneonta; her five grandnephews and one grandniece, Casey and Cameron Twomey, Tyler and Nicholas Stein, and Jackson and Makenna Frazier; her sister-in-law, Joan Fuller of Otego, and several cousins.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 1 Birchwood Drive, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Freda A. Scavo, 75; New York Telephone Retiree
Freda A. Scavo, 75, of Oneonta, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 27, 2009, at the Otsego Manor Nursing Home, Cooperstown.
Freda was born on Aug. 16, 1934, in Oneonta, the daughter of Harold A. and Ruth (Singleton) Stenson.
She married Bruno A. Scavo on Feb. 21, 1954, in Oneonta.
She worked for 30 years as a studies clerk for New York Telephone in Oneonta until retirement in 1984.
She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers. She was an avid golfer and a member of the Oneonta Country Club.
Freda was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and sister.
She will be fondly remembered for her everlasting smile and the hugs she gave her friends.
Freda is survived by her husband; her sons, Victor L. Scavo and his wife, Tina, of Spotsylvania, Va., and John A. Scavo and his wife, Mary, of Benicia, Calif. Also, grandchildren Elizabeth Scavo of New York City, and Catherine and Kathleen Scavo of Benicia; her sisters, Grace McDowell of Florida, Frances (Martin) Northrup of Oneonta, Janice (Allan) Coulter of Laurens, Sandra Berger of Oneonta, Sharon Shaver of Mount Vision, and Nadine (Terry) Stenson Fitz-Henry of Oneonta; her brother, Harold W. Stenson of North Carolina, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Freda was predeceased by her parents, and a sister, Amelia Shearer Rukan
The funeral service was planned at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with Rev. Joseph Benintende, pastor of St. Mary’s Church, officiating.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Otsego Manor, especially Julie Miller for the loving care given to Freda.

Ruth Davidson, 90; Taught Home Ec
Ruth M. Davidson died peacefully on Sept. 24, 2009, at Iroquois Nursing Home in Jamesville after an extended illness.
She was born Feb. 20, 1919, in West Delhi to parents Arthur and Edith Morrison.
Ruth married Calvin Davidson on July 11, 1942. They made their home in Treadwell for most of their lives.
She began her education in the one-room West Delhi District School 7 and graduated from A. L. Kellogg Central School in Treadwell in 1935. She graduated from Delhi Ag & Tech in 1937 and from Syracuse University College of Home Economics & Education in 1941. She received her masters in home economics education from SUNY Oneonta in 1954.
“Mrs. D” taught home economics at Canajoharie, A. L. Kellogg and Unatego and supervised student teachers from SUNY Oneonta. She retired in 1974.
She was active in the Treadwell United Methodist Church, Delta Kappa Gamma, Delaware County Historical Association, Delaware County Cooperative Extension,
Treadwell Community Improvement Club and various bridge clubs. She loved gardening and antiques.
She is survived by her husband, Calvin, who continues to live at Iroquois Nursing Home; sister Marjorie Smith; son Richard and his wife, Shirley; daughter, Nancy; grand-children, Joel Bassani, Jeffrey Bassani, Laura Tedesco.
Graveside services were Monday, Sept. 28, at the Croton Union Cemetery in Treadwell with Rev. Kenneth Baldwin, officiating. A memorial service followed at the Treadwell United Methodist Church.
Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home.

Dorothy Jones, 82; Farmed With Husband
Dorothy D. Jones, 82, of Oneonta, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2009, at the A. O. Fox Nursing Home.
Dorothy was born on Sept. 5, 1927, in Oneonta the daughter of Arthur and Ida (Eggler) Dykeman. She married Thomas L. Jones, Sr. on Sept. 22, 1945.
Dorothy was a quality control coordinator for 20 years for the ECD Bendix in Sidney; she retired in 1970.
For 43 years she and her husband operated a farm in the Town of Meredith.
Dorothy is survived by her husband of 64 years; her three children, Thomas Jones, Jr. and his wife, Shelly, of Ingells, Ind., Richard Jones and his wife, Chris, of Oneonta, and Margaret Robinson and her husband, Roy, of Otego. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and three step great-grandchildren.

Erin Hammac, 38; Oneonta Roots, Loved Animals

ONEONTA – Erin Hammac, 38, of Lebanon, Tenn., died on Saturday, Aug. 29, 2009 from a massive heart attack.
Erin was born on October 4, 1970 in Oneonta.
She was an animal lover. She loved her two cats. They were her babies. Erin loved the warm weather down south. She always hated the winters up here in New York so it was no surprise when she moved to Tennessee. She was a very caring person and would do anything she could to help others. She loved her family with all of her heart and would call home every chance she could.
Erin is survived by her mother and stepfather, Judy and Wallace Pelkey of Alburg, Vermont; her father, William Hammac; her grandparents, John O’kelly and Carol VanHoesen of Oneonta; her brother, Blair Hammac of Oneonta; her sister, Jamie Moxham of Hartwick; her three nephews, and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Erin also left behind her boyfriend, Randy Shampo of Tennessee, who she loved dearly and talked about often. She also left behind many close friends that she adored.
Erin was a wonderful person and we’re sad to see her go.
A memorial service will be held at 1 pm on Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2009 at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand Street, Oneonta with Rev. Joseph Benintende, pastor of St. Mary’s Church, officiating. There will be no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Humane Association, 63 Inverness Drive East, Englewood, CO 80112, in honor of Erin.

Rose J. Pallace, 86; Supervisor For Jamesway’s Whole Local Tenure

ONEONTA – Rose J. Pallace, 86, supervisor at Oneonta’s Jamesway from the day it opened to the day it closed, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009, at her home.
Rose was born on March 3, 1923, in Oneonta, the daughter of the late Anthony and Josephine (Fortanella) Brienza. She married Anthony “Bud” Pallace on Dec. 12, 1942. He predeceased her on March 13, 1949.
Rose was a native of Oneonta who took great pride in her city. A dedicated worker and avid reader, she was also devoted to her grandsons, great-grandson and their families.
Survivors include a son, Mike Pallace, and his wife Sandra, of Saratoga Springs; grandsons Christopher (Tina) Pallace and Nathan Pallace, both of Rochester, and great-grandson Logan Pallace of Rochester. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, Danny, Jack, Louie, John and Anthony.
Calling ours were Saturday, Aug. 29, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, which handled the arrangements.

Pamela Ann Olmstead, 63, Dies After Long Illness

OTEGO – Pamela Ann (Lundy) Olmstead, 63, of Otego, passed away Friday, Aug. 21, 2009, in her home surrounded with her family following an extended illness.
She was born Jan. 18, 1946. She was the daughter of the late Richard Anthony and Sarah Ester (Harris) Lundy. Pam spent her younger years in the Johnstown-Gloversville area.
She moved to Oneonta in 1963. Soon after, she met and on Dec. 11, 1965, married Arthur W. Olmstead. They were married for 43 years.
Pamela worked for the Oneonta Dress Factory, Great American and Busy Bee Convenience Store until it was purchased by Red Apple. She retired from Red Apple in 2007.
She is survived by her husband, her two daughters, Christine Konu and her husband Douglas, of Oneonta, and Teresa Olmstead of Otego; and her three grandchildren, Mike and Adrienne Konu of Orland, Calif., and Sarah Konu of Oneonta; her brother, Brian “Bud” Lundy, and his wife, Noreen; sister-in-law Anita Lundy; in-laws Mary Miller, Janice Simonds, Edith and Paul Schrull, Gary and Linda Olmstead, Paul and Pam Olmstead and Richard and Susan Olmstead; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded by her sister, Sally Lundy, who died at birth; and a brother, Richard J. Lundy, who passed in 1992.
Pamela received much joy from her granddaughter, Sarah. There were many “sleep-overs” on the weekends. As Sarah walked to school on Friday mornings, she would smile as she told her parents that she was going to have a sleep-over with Nammy, knowing she was always welcome. With retirement, Pamela and her “Sweetest of Little Hearts” would spent much of their time amusing each other. Pamela and Sarah shared a very special love, that only comes from grandparents and grandchildren.
The family would like to extend their many thanks to the caring nurses, therapists and support staff that contributed to making her extended stays in Bassett Hospital as comfortable as possible. In addition, they would also like to thank the At-Home Care and Catskill Area Hospice staff for their care and support. The many cards and notes received from the staff gave Pamela much encouragement while she was at home and reminded her of the extended family they had become.
Calling hours were Monday, Aug. 24, at the Bookhout Funeral Home,, Otego.
Funeral services were the following day at the funeral home with Father Ronald Green of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Worcester, officiating. Interment followed.

Pat Terry, 58, Of Franklin; Walton Native

FRANKLIN – James F. “Pat” Terry, 58, of Franklin, passed away on Monday, Aug. 17, 2009, at the Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.
Pat was born on Aug. 24, 1950, in Walton, the son of James D. and Frances (Davis) Terry.
Pat was a lifelong area resident and a member of the Franklin Fire Department.
Pat is survived by his mother, Frances Terry of Franklin; his son, Rodney Renwick; his brothers, Lynn Terry of Vestal, Gerald, David, Matt and Herman Terry, all of Franklin, and his fiancé, Missy Johnson and step-daughter, Michaela.
Calling hours for friends and family are 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, 425 Main St., Franklin.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery in Franklin, with Rev. David Rockwell officiating.

Leo W. Reed, 79, Enjoyed Stock-Car Racing, Family

ONEONTA – Leo W. Reed, 79, of Oneonta, an Air Force veteran who enjoyed stock-car racing, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2009 at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.
He was born Nov. 11, 1929 in Gilboa, the son of the late Morton and Edna (VanValkenburgh) Reed.
On May 7, 1948, Leo married Viola Haynes in Oneonta. Together they shared 61 years of marriage.
For 37 years, Leo worked at Sawyer’s Cleaners. He also had his own custodial service and cleaned several area businesses. He drove truck for the state Department of Transportation and worked in maintenance for the City of Oneonta.
Leo had a partnership in a stock car, and enjoyed trapping and, most of all, spending time with his family especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was a member of the Odd Fellows and attended the First Baptist Church of Oneonta.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Robert and Linda Reed of Oneonta, Marilyn and Choral Mattison of Milford and Debra and Doug Allen of Oneonta; seven grandchildren, Kimberly (Chris) Eastman, Susan (Paul) Meador, Robert (Tracy) Reed, Amy (Tim) Adkins, James Madison, Erin (Curtis) Abare and William Allen; 10 great grandchildren, Michaela and Leighton Eastman, Samuel Meador, Landen Reed, Malorie Smith, Mari-Lyn and Matthew Adkins, Bryan, Morgan and AJ Abare; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his sister, Evelyn Adee; and brother, Leonard Reed.
A private graveside service was held on Tuesday, Aug. 11, in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Richard W. Cole, 81; City Native

ONEONTA – Richard W. Cole, 81, an Oneonta native who loved hunting and fishing and worked for 40 years at J.J. Maloney Co. as a candy and tobacco salesman, passed away Monday, Aug. 3, 2009, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.
He was born Feb. 3, 1928, the son of Julian and Beatrice (Campbell) Cole. He was a 1946 graduate of Oneonta High School.
He married Pauline Lasher on Oct. 16, 1948, at the Portlandville Methodist Church.
During World War II, Dick was a volunteer plane spotter, scanning the skies over Oneonta from a top of the Armory, hospital and the Oneonta Men’s Club (present Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono building).
He was a life member of the Crumhorn Rod & Gun Club and a member of the NRA. At one time he was a Boy Scout troop leader in Milford and Schenevus. Dick loved to work in his wood shop and was an avid trap shooter. For many years he was involved in stocking fish in the local trout streams.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years; three sons, William Z. Cole and wife Ruth, of Willow Springs, N.C., Jack R. Cole and wife Sue, of Walton, and Brian S. Cole and wife Shell, of Maryland; grandchildren, Erik Cole and wife Kim, Cyndi Fowler and husband Dwayn, Elizabeth Cole and Brian Magnin, Daniel Cole and Danielle Tharp and Timothy Cole; five great-grandchildren; brother-in-law John Lasher and wife Rita Lasher, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral service was Friday, Aug. 7, 2009 at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home funeral home, with his daughter-in-law, the Rev. Sue Cole of Christ Church, Walton, officiating. Interment followed at the Maryland Cemetery.

Albert L. Symonds, 88; Superintendent of Mails

ONEONTA – Albert L. Symonds, 88, of Oneonta, a Postal Service employee for 34 years, rising to the rank of superintendent of mails, passed away Thursday, Aug. 6, 2009, at home.
He was born Sept. 3, 1920, in Oneonta the son of the late William R. and Grace (Lasher) Symonds.
For three years, Albert served in the Army during World War II and was honorably discharged.
In 1948, he married Marie Ferguson who predeceased him in 1985. In 1992, he married Jane W. Blanchard, who survives him.
Albert was promoted to superintendent of mails in 1962, and retired in 1976.
He was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church for over 40 years, serving as elder and several terms as a trustee. He was a member of the Oneonta Lodge #1312 B.P.O. Elks, the American Legion Post #259 for over 50 years and the Hartwick College Citizens Board.
In addition to his wife, survivors includestep children, Richard Blanchard of Saratoga Springs, Patricia Blanchard of Wading River, and Janet Helman of Bainbridge; nine step-grandchildren; and 11 step-great-grandchildren.
